1. Principle

A cookie is a small file that a website stores on your device. Some are needed for the service to work, others improve convenience, and others are used to measure audiences, personalise content or target advertising. Travia never uses that last category. The public website sets a necessary cookie to remember your consent choice and, if you agree, a language cookie; the platform sets three. All of them are described below, without exception.

2. Public website

The __Host-travia_cookie_consent cookie records your choice. The__Host-travia_lang language cookie is created only after you agree and select a language. Until then, the display language is inferred without recording anything: in Switzerland, from the canton matching your IP address; outside Switzerland, from your browser language, for the home page. There is no pixel, no browser fingerprinting and no local storage for tracking purposes. The banner lets you accept or refuse language storage, and “Manage cookies” remains available afterwards.

The site is available in French, English and German. When you change language from the header or footer, this choice is stored in a cookie only after you accept language storage in the banner, then read again when the home page opens, to take you to the version you chose. “Manage cookies” lets you change this choice at any time.

Storage requires an ordinary left click and acceptance of language storage. A Ctrl/Cmd-click or middle click, which opens the translation in another tab, does not change your preference; without JavaScript, after refusal, or if your browser blocks cookies, switching language works but nothing is stored.

The match between IP address and canton is made on our server, using a table built into the site (IP Geolocation by DB-IP, CC BY 4.0 licence): your address is not passed to any third party or kept for this purpose, and nothing is stored on your device. It can be inaccurate, especially on mobile or corporate networks: one click on FR, EN or DE corrects the language and stores your choice. It does not apply when you are already browsing the site, nor if you have refused storage.

NamePurposeContentDuration
__Host-travia_cookie_consentRemember whether you accept or refuse language storage“accepted” or “refused”182 days at most
__Host-travia_langRemember the language you choseOne value among “fr”, “en”, “de” and “off” (refusal)182 days at most (about six months)

These cookies contain only a consent state or your chosen language. They hold no unique identifier and no browsing history, and are not used for tracking or advertising. No third party can access it: its __Host- prefix requires the browser to reject it if it were set with a Domain attribute or on another path, and it is written with Secure and SameSite=Lax. Like any cookie of the domain, it accompanies requests to the site and may therefore appear in the host’s technical logs, alongside the IP address and user agent.

This cookie serves a personalisation that you expressly request and that is an integral part of a multilingual website. Under Swiss law, Art. 45c let. b of the Telecommunications Act (TCA) requires that you be informed of the processing, its purpose and your right to refuse it, and of how to do so: this is the purpose of the notice under the selector, of this page and of the refusal control in section 6. Where European Union law applies, a tracker limited to language preference falls within the cases that authorities consider exempt from consent when the personalisation is intrinsic to the service; the notice at the point of choice and the 182-day maximum duration aim to stay within that framework.

Fonts are served from the site’s own domain, with no call to a third-party server during your visit. Images, the map and animations are local resources.

Only the server’s technical logs record requests, as described in the privacy policy. These logs do not rely on any tracker stored on your device.

3. Platform

Authenticated access to the platform requires strictly necessary cookies. They are used neither for advertising nor for cross-site tracking.

TypePurposeDuration
Authentication sessionKeep the session open and link requests to the right userDuration of the session, or until logout
SecurityProtection against request forgery and detection of abnormal sessionsDuration of the session
Interface preferencesRemember the working language and chosen display settings12 months at most

Session and security cookies are necessary to provide a service expressly requested by the user: setting them does not require prior consent, and refusing them prevents logging in to the platform.

The interface preferences cookie, however, is not essential: it improves convenience. It can be refused or deleted without preventing use of the platform; only the display settings then return to their defaults. Where European Union law applies, it is only set with the user’s agreement.

4. What the site does not use

  • no third-party audience measurement tool;
  • no advertising network, no conversion pixel, no retargeting;
  • no social network button or widget loaded from a third-party domain;
  • no map, video or font called from an external service during the visit;
  • no sharing of browsing data with third parties for commercial purposes.

A banner appears on the first visit. It lets you accept or refuse language storage without blocking the public site’s necessary functions; after your choice, “Manage cookies” remains available. No audience measurement or advertising tool is active, and any change would require this page and the consent mechanism to be updated.

5. Legal framework

In Switzerland, Art. 45c let. b of the Telecommunications Act (TCA) allows data to be processed on a third party’s device provided users are informed of the processing, its purpose and their right to refuse it. This page is that information.

Where Directive 2002/58/EC and the GDPR apply, strictly necessary cookies remain exempt from consent; any measurement or targeting tracker would require prior consent, collected through a compliant banner.

6. Managing cookies

You can change your choice from the banner on this page or via the “Manage cookies” button.

The control below requires JavaScript. Without it, no language cookie is set.

The refusal is kept in __Host-travia_cookie_consent, and the language preference is set to “off”. While it is refused, the site no longer records your language or redirects you. The “Manage cookies” button lets you reactivate it.

Every browser also lets you view, block or delete cookies: in the privacy settings, or through private browsing. Deleting __Host-travia_lang simply makes the site forget your language: it will return to the language of your canton or, failing that, French, and you can choose again. Blocking strictly necessary cookies, however, prevents logging in to the platform.

7. If this were to change

Adding audience measurement, online appointment booking or a third-party service would lead to an update of this page and, where applicable law requires, to a prior consent mechanism that is as easy to refuse as to accept.
